Intent
At St Augustine's, our Design and Technology curriculum is designed to inspire creativity, practical problem-solving, and innovation in all pupils. Through the Kapow Primary scheme, we aim to provide a broad and balanced DT education that:
-
Builds essential skills in designing, making, evaluating, and applying technical knowledge.
-
Encourages pupils to become critical thinkers and resourceful learners.
-
Connects learning to real-world contexts, including careers, sustainability, and enterprise.
-
Ensures progression of knowledge and skills across EYFS, KS1, and KS2.
-
Foster confidence and enjoyment in using tools, materials, and digital technologies safely and effectively.
Implementation
We use the Kapow Primary DT scheme to deliver a structured, progressive curriculum across all year groups. This includes:
-
Well-sequenced units that build on prior knowledge and ensure clear skill development across five key areas:
-
Mechanisms
-
Structures
-
Textiles
-
Cooking and nutrition
-
Electrical systems (KS2 only)
-
-
Each unit follows the design-make-evaluate process, allowing pupils to explore, plan, create, and reflect.
-
Lessons are taught discretely each term or in blocks, depending on timetabling, and include opportunities for cross-curricular links with subjects such as Science, Maths, and Computing.
-
Teachers have access to high-quality resources, video demonstrations, and CPD materials via Kapow, ensuring subject knowledge and delivery are consistent and effective.
-
Health and safety are embedded in every lesson, with children taught how to use tools and equipment responsibly.
Impact
Through Kapow’s curriculum and our school’s creative teaching approach, pupils at St Augustine's:
-
Develop a secure understanding of DT concepts, vocabulary, and practical skills.
-
Demonstrate resilience, curiosity, and independence in problem-solving tasks.
-
Understand the importance of evaluating and refining their work.
-
Are enthusiastic and motivated to learn, often showcasing their learning beyond the classroom.
-
Leave primary school equipped with the skills and knowledge needed for further DT learning in secondary education.
We measure the impact of our DT curriculum through:
-
Pupil voice, which shows high levels of enjoyment and engagement.
-
Work scrutiny and photographic evidence of projects.
-
Teacher assessments of practical outcomes and planning documentation.
-
Learning walks and lesson observations that highlight progression and skill development.
